Get a Brand-New Gorgeous Smile with Porcelain Veneers

Would you like to improve the look of your smile? Veneers may be just what you need, and our dentist can help. Veneers have become a popular way to improve your smile because of their simplicity, effectiveness, and high level of customization options available due to advances in technology over recent years. They’re used to correct gaps between teeth, chipped teeth, misaligned teeth, and discolored or stained teeth. They can also prevent decay by strengthening the tooth’s surface. Veneers are made of a shell of durable material that is custom-fit to the shape of your teeth to correct imperfections in appearance. At Wohler’s Family Dentistry, we use porcelain veneers, which are stronger and provide a more natural look compared to composite veneers.

Porcelain VS. Composite Veneers

Veneers come in two varieties: porcelain and composite resin. Porcelain offers numerous advantages over composite veneers. First, porcelain veneers look more like your natural teeth — so much so that many people cannot tell you have them unless they get very close to your mouth. They have the same translucency of enamel, which makes them reflect light in the same way as natural teeth. In addition to being natural-looking, they also hold up better to everyday wear and tear than composite resins. It is commonly perceived that porcelains are easily chipped or broken, but porcelains made today are manufactured to be stronger than ever. Porcelain veneers are as strong, if not stronger, than your natural teeth. Unlike composite veneers, porcelain veneers are also stain-resistant. This is because porcelain is non-porous. Natural teeth are covered in microscopic pores which absorb stains from drinks such as coffee and red wine. Porcelain veneers are absent of these pores, so tooth-staining substances slide right off of the surface. At Wohler’s Family Dentist in Marietta, GA , our veneers are porcelain, so they are very durable, long-lasting, and stain-resistant. With the proper installation by your dentist, and care and hygiene by you, porcelain veneers can last 10-20 years, while composite veneers typically only last 4-8 years.

Porcelain Veneers for Common Dental Issues

Recent advances in technology have made porcelain veneers the cosmetic choice of many patients and dentists alike. It is worth noting that veneers are not merely a cosmetic procedure – they can also effectively address common dental issues such as tooth sensitivity and enamel erosion. Porcelain is much less susceptible to temperature changes than natural tooth enamel, making your teeth more tolerant of very hot or cold food and drinks. The porcelain also tends to be harder than tooth enamel, providing additional protection from the damaging effects of teeth grinding and clenching, as well as protecting your teeth from exposure to food and drinks that can degrade your tooth enamel.

Getting Porcelain Veneers - What’s Involved?

Veneer treatments are usually completed in just a few visits to Wohler’s Family Dentistry. In the first visit, a very thin layer may need to be removed from the tooth’s surface to make room for the veneer. This is necessary so your new tooth looks natural and not bulky once the veneer has been attached to your tooth. Next, a mold is taken of your prepared tooth and an advanced color matching process is done to make sure your veneer looks natural and cohesive with the rest of your teeth. It’s easy to change the color of the porcelain, so you can get an exact match for your unique smile. Then, all the information is sent to a lab that manufactures your veneer.

Once your personalized veneer is made, it will be sent to our dentist, and at your next dentist appointment, it will be installed. At the beginning of this appointment, our dentist will place the veneer over your tooth to make sure everything looks perfect, and make any final adjustments if necessary. Then, your teeth will be deep cleaned by our dentist. Once this is done, it’s time to install the veneer. For this, a special dental cement bonding agent is used to secure the veneer in place, and ultraviolet light is used to harden the bonding agent. Lastly, any excess cement will be removed, and our dentist will make sure your veneer is comfortable as well as attractive.

There may be some soreness in your mouth and jaw as you adjust to this new addition, but it usually passes within a week. Porcelain veneers are a great way to protect and improve the appearance of your natural teeth while also providing long-term dental benefits.
